Final Draft:

Endless Education

Education will never end. There will always be new discoveries and new views. In addition, education was never meant to come easily. Without education we would not be who we are today. We possibly might not even have higher education possibilities, or something simple as an iPhone. We are learning new things everyday whether it is in a classroom, or something that your father taught you. Education will never end even if we are not in a school environment. Achieving an higher education will need to involve an abundant amount of studying, and to keep an open mind when one learns something new.

When one thinks of a higher education, like attending a College or a University, parties and all the “fun” things comes to mind. However, “a genuine higher education is unsettling; it is not meant to be a cosy experience” (The Idea of Higher Education). After reading The Idea of Higher Education, by Ronald Barnett, It opened my mind about how hard it is to earn a higher education. Not only will it be hard to earn a higher education, but you have to think a certain way to achieve the education. The journey to becoming a doctor or a dental hygienist, includes long rigorous nights of studying. In addition most of us will fail at first, scoring poorly on test may happen. However, it is okay to fail, It will just push one that much harder to excel on the next test. Once again education is not something that can easily be accomplished, you have to put in an abundant amount of time and effort.

Both of the passages that were assigned to be read came hand in hand. Even if The Idea of Higher Education, by Ronald Barnett was written in 1991, and Education For Profit, Education For Democracy, by Martha Nussbaum was written in 2010, which is a huge gap, they both share common points. They both relate, because higher education is something you have to work ambitiously for. In order to be successful in a higher education you have to have the right mindset. One has to challenge “the mind to become active, competent, and thoughtfully critical in a complex world” (Education For Profit, Education For Democracy), to be successful. Being single minded restricts you from furthering your education. It is impossible to know everything. Single minded people tend to think about their views only, challenge yourself to view the opposing view. Or make new discoveries if you believe you know everything.

“You learn something new everyday if you pay attention” says Ray Leblond. This quote immediately came to mind once I read both of these passages. The world has a never ending amount of things to discover and learn. If you want to be involved in a higher education you have to work for it. Nothing will come to you by partying or doing fun activities that interfere with academics. Of course there is a time and place to have fun. But nonetheless, I want to leave UNE feeling accomplished of my Dental Hygiene major.I want to leave knowing that I worked my hardest and kept an open mind towards my education. After four years at UNE, receiving a higher education will not be effortless, but will certainly be rewarding.

Education is everywhere, whether it be in schools or not. However, if we want to have a successful higher education we have to work ambitiously and keep an open mind. My futures years at UNE will be some of the hardest time with my academics that I may face, but in the end I know that it will be rewarding. As long as there is earth, there will always be something new to learn.
