Optimistic Outlook

A social change can happen through an aggressive approach or through a delicate approach. In 350.org film, Do the Math, climate activist Bill Mckibben emphasizes that in order for a change to happen, we need to “…make a little noise, be a little uncomfortable, push other people to be a little uncomfortable”(1:13). This approach that Mckibben advises may not be the most friendly way to make a change. However it allows your voice and position in movement to be heard. Change isn’t always going to be the most comfortable situation to be in, however it can have beautiful outcomes. Writer Barbara Kingsolver gets interviewed her career, interests, and of course about climate change. She explains, “People’s capacity to change makes [her] fundamentally optimistic” (6). People have the ability to change, and make a change. It essentially comes down to if they are willing to ignite a change. By taking this approach that Kingsolver believes in creates a sense of hope that we, humans, will and are capable of change. Although Mckibben advocates a more aggressive approach than Kingsolver’s optimic outlook of our abilities to change, they both essentially explain how important a social change in climate change is. They both fight for the earth and our future and could care less about the money.
